Hotels Near Riverstage Brisbane: An Honest Family Guide

Updated Oct 27, 2026
Honest, downside-forward guide to hotels near Riverstage, Brisbane: the grass-slope rules, the good, the overrated and what's actually worth it for families.
Hotels Near Riverstage Brisbane: An Honest Family Guide

Confession first: none of the five hotels below sits on Riverstage's doorstep, and I wasted an evening of planning assuming one would (rookie error from a man who once lectured crews on punctuality). What you get instead is a base-by-base choice with an honest trade for each, plus a Riverstage calendar of seven nights between 6 November and 8 December 2026. Fans flying in for a band, or parents juggling a school night, trust me: pick the base before you buy the tickets.

The Worst Gate Time Ever: What Riverstage Asks of Families

I once timed a family transfer like a tide window, to the minute, and still missed the opening act, because children run on their own tide. (The question crews always asked me coming into port was 'how long till we're alongside?' and my honest answer was always 'longer than you think'. Same goes here.)

What the venue asks: every person needs a ticket, babes in arms included. Children aged 12 and under must be with a paying adult. General admission means sitting on a gentle grassed slope, so bring a rug. It is cashless, there is no parking on site, rain does not stop the show unless it is unsafe, and the curfew is 10pm.

Seven Riverstage Nights, Gig by Gig

My pick for families is Jack Johnson on Friday 6 November, purely because gates open at 4:30pm and it finishes at 10pm. (My opinion, not the venue's.) Check each event page before bringing under-12s to the louder nights.

  • 🎸 Fri 6 Nov: Jack Johnson, gates 4:30pm
  • 🎤 Wed 11 Nov: Khalid, gates 6pm, start 7:30pm
  • 🎶 Tue 17 Nov: Dermot Kennedy, gates 6pm
  • 🎹 Sun 22 Nov: LANY, gates 6pm
  • 🎸 Wed 25 Nov: Two Door Cinema Club with The Vaccines, gates 6pm
  • 🤘 Sun 29 Nov: Rise Against, gates 6pm, start 8pm
  • 🌀 Tue 8 Dec: A Perfect Circle, doors 5:45pm

The Worst Pre-Show Plan Ever, Fixed on South Bank

I once packed the afternoon before a show so tightly that the kids arrived spent (my fault, entirely). Riverstage sits on the Gardens Point edge of the CBD, so keep the pre-show plan light and close. Cross the Goodwill Bridge to South Bank, where Streets Beach is free and lifeguard-patrolled all year, hours varying, so swim only when the lifeguards are on duty. Aquativity suits small children. The Queensland Museum's SparkLab is ticketed and its timed sessions sell out in school holidays. GOMA's Jim Henson exhibition runs until 18 April 2027.

🚌 CityCats stop at QUT Gardens Point. They are suspended when the river runs high, so confirm the day's sailing at the terminal.

Base One: The Riverfront at Hamilton

Stay here for the river and the pool; you trade the walk to the gates for a 5-minute drive to the city centre (I have overpaid for a view and called it strategy). Hamilton's Northshore end is the CityCat terminus, and Eat Street Northshore is a night market of about 180 shipping containers with live music, typically on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Check its entry arrangements and go early, because Saturday nights are busy and noisy. Newstead House, Brisbane's oldest surviving home, opens on Fridays and Sundays with no booking.

Base One: The Riverfront at Hamilton
★★★★★

Stay here for the riverfront at Hamilton; you trade a short walk to Riverstage for a resort-style pool, a spa pool and a sauna. It is a 5-minute drive from the city centre and 10 from the airport, with family rooms, free Wi-Fi and private parking. Room service breakfast starts at 6:30am on weekdays, and Plates restaurant has the river views (the breakfast is rated very good, which I trust more than my own pancakes). Trust me, a tour desk that books airport transfers is a quiet win. Hotels in Hamilton, Brisbane

Base Two: Showgrounds, the Valley and Story Bridge

The Showgrounds precinct puts you across the road from the RNA Showgrounds, home of the Ekka, which runs 7 to 15 August 2027. The trade: it sits beside the Valley, the nightlife district, so weekend nights run loud (I once booked above a lively street for a sleepy-kids week and learned it the hard way). The Story Bridge Adventure Climb takes about 90 minutes from Howard Smith Wharves. The bridge closes to traffic from 27 December 2026 to 18 January 2027, though the eastern footpath stays open.

Base Two: Showgrounds, the Valley and Story Bridge
★★★★★

Stay here if a pool and the RNA Showgrounds across the road matter more than a short walk to Riverstage. Story Bridge is 1.4 km away and Brisbane Airport 11 km. It has family rooms, an outdoor pool, a 24-hour front desk and a fitness centre, with Six Acres Restaurant and Bar Gusto onsite (the bar is my confessed downside if you want quiet evenings, though the breakfast is rated good). Base Three: Toowong, Where the Kitchenette Wins

Toowong is the self-catering base. A studio with a kitchenette, a pool and barbecues beats three restaurant bills a day (the one budget trick I'm proud of). The CityCat line calls at Regatta, and the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha are free and open daily. The planetarium there has free entry, but its shows are ticketed and can sell out, so book early. I would confirm the day's sailing before relying on the ferry home after dark.

Base Three: Toowong, Where the Kitchenette Wins
★★★★

Stay here for the kitchenette and the pool; you trade hotel polish for fully serviced, self-contained studios with a private balcony. Bus stops and Toowong Railway Station are 2 minutes' walk, Toowong Village Shopping Centre the same, and Regatta Ferry Terminal 5. Suncorp Stadium and the University of Queensland are 6 minutes' drive. Free on-site undercover parking even takes trailers, and there is a barbecue area (I have never once needed the trailer space, but I admire it). See the apartments ->

Base Four: Taringa and the No-Car Plan

Taringa is the train base, and Riverstage has no parking on site, so skipping the car is the whole argument for it (I once circled a car park for forty minutes, and I still think about it). Suncorp Stadium is 4.7 km from the hotel with a direct train. Roma Street Parkland, about 6 km away, is a free 16-hectare park with two playgrounds and free barbecues. A flat 50-cent Translink fare covers the trains, so plan the show-night journey in the Translink app beforehand.

Base Four: Taringa and the No-Car Plan
★★★★★

Stay here for the direct access to Taringa Train Station and the skyline; you trade distance, as the airport is 22 km away and the University of Queensland 2.8 km. There are 63 boutique suites with mountain or city views, each with a mini fridge, microwave and dining table, plus family rooms and 2 restaurants. The level 5 Guest Lounge has free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee, and sweeping city skyline views (I booked 'boutique' once expecting grand and the lounge talked me round). Guest reviews on Tripadvisor ↗

Base Five: The Airport Night

Flying in for the gig? The Airtrain runs from both terminals to Central and Roma Street in roughly 25 minutes (confirm on the timetable), but it charges its own fares, not the flat 50 cents. The Domestic and International terminals are separate buildings, so allow time between them. Declare all food on arrival, because biosecurity is strict (I once bought a sandwich I wasn't allowed to finish). More options sit in Brisbane airport accommodation.

Base Five: The Airport Night
★★★★★

Stay here for the flight, not the gig; you trade proximity to Riverstage for an outdoor pool, family rooms and an airport shuttle. The airport precinct location has DFO shopping next door, and Brisbane Entertainment Centre and Portside Wharf are 10 minutes' drive away. The fitness centre overlooks the airport, and there is a sauna and a rooftop relaxation terrace. Trust me, a 24-hour front desk beats a dawn departure with tired children. The Worst Forecast Ever, and the Last Word

Storm season runs roughly October to March, and Riverstage shows go ahead in rain unless deemed unsafe, so pack ponchos and a dry-clothes bag (I've sailed through worse and still complained). Never enter floodwater. Later on the calendar: the Lord Mayor's fireworks at South Bank on 31 December, and Riverfire on Saturday 4 September 2027. Trust me, you won't want to leave, though the kids will want their beds by 10pm. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
